Household chlorine bleach can alter the pigments responsible for a fabric’s color. On a dark garment, the damaged area may appear white, yellow, orange, pink, reddish, or significantly lighter than the surrounding material.
In other words, there often isn’t anything sitting on top of the fibers waiting to be washed away.
Some of the original color is gone.
Bleach can also damage textile fibers themselves, which is why severely bleached fabric may eventually become thin, brittle, or weak. Even dye manufacturers caution that bleach-damaged fabric can be difficult to recolor successfully.
