My 16-Year-Old Daughter Vanished from a Crowded Beach – Eight Years Later, I Saw Her Handmade Cover-up on a Stranger

That was how he presented it.

Two days away.

A small adventure.

Something exciting.

Something that would supposedly prove she trusted him.

He told her to leave her phone behind so we couldn’t track her.

She left her sandals because she had been walking barefoot.

She climbed into his car wearing her swimsuit and the turquoise cover-up.

I pressed both hands over my mouth.

Michael looked physically ill.

“What happened?” he asked. “Why didn’t she come back?”

Elaine was silent for a moment.

“Because Caleb didn’t bring her back.”

At first, Nora believed they were simply staying away a little longer.

Then things changed.

Caleb began deciding where she could go.

He kept control of most of their money.

He told her the police were looking for him too and that if she returned home, they would both get into trouble.

Then came the lies about us.

He told Nora we hated her.

That we would never forgive her for leaving.

That everyone would call her foolish.

That there was no point going back.

They moved repeatedly.

Cheap motels.

Friends’ apartments.

Eventually another state.

Caleb took irregular jobs.

Nora worked too.

But he controlled most of what she earned.

Whenever she talked about leaving, he frightened her into staying.

Sometimes with threats.

Sometimes by insisting he could make sure she never saw us again.

“He told her he knew where you lived,” Elaine said. “He made her believe contacting you could put you in danger.”

I stared at her.
