She reached into her bag and pulled out a sealed envelope.
Then handed it to me.
Written across the front were five words:
DAVID DESERVES THE REAL TRUTH.
Mom appeared behind me.
She saw the handwriting.
Her coffee mug slipped from her hand.
It shattered across the floor.
I turned.
Mom had gone completely white.
“Mom?”
She stared at the envelope as though it were a loaded weapon.
Then whispered something I would never forget.
“David… Richard wasn’t the one who started this.”
