Ovidiu finally understood: all that meat was for animals. Lidia told them that, after her son’s death, she had not been able to bear to see abandoned animals. It started with two dogs. Then there were five, ten, and more continued to arrive.

The ship was not luxurious, but it was clean. There were containers of fresh water, old blankets, straw and makeshift cages for sick animals. On a wall hung a notebook where Lidia carefully wrote down each rescue: where she had found it, what treatment she received and if it had been adopted.

A veterinarian promised to care for the animals without charging. Volunteers came to clean the ship and build safer shelters.
The municipality, together with an animal protection association, obtained authorized land where the animals were moved little by little. There they would receive adequate care and have a better chance of being adopted. Lidia was invited to stay as a permanent volunteer.
The real lesson
The first day at the new shelter, one of the police officers came to visit her. He found her petting an old dog that had fallen asleep on her knees.
